If you consider yourself an amateur photographer, then one way of improving the quality of your pictures, and have more creative freedom in photography, is to acquire an SLR. By using an SLR, you have the ability to own many different types of Olympus camera lenses. All these lenses tend to fall in three categories, limiting your choices.
These different Olympus camera lenses are placed in the following groups: telephoto, portrait, and macro.
Telephoto Lenses
A telephoto lens is a long-focus lens. Technically, this means that the focal length of the lens is larger than the physical length.
In other words, this means that you are able to focus on objects located far away. Have you looked at images of wildlife? Such images are almost always snapped with a telephoto lens.
Portrait Lenses
Portrait lens is not really the professional name for these lenses; this is a great name for the lens though, because they may be used to take portraits. If a model stands just a few yards in front of the camera, using a telephoto lens will only allow you to focus on the model’s nose! Usually, you will want to include at least the full face.
Aperture plays a large role in the beauty of your pictures, and if you enjoy this format of photography, it will be worth buying a more expensive lens with a larger aperture. There is a prominent difference in pictures that have f/2.8 and f/1.4 aperture. You should definitely try out such lenses. Doing so will give you knowledge of what is possible.
A lens with a wide aperture allows the photographer to focus only on one aspect of the object. For example, if a person is drinking from a cup of coffee, then you can use the camera, armed with a f/1.4 lens, to focus on just the person’s face, but have the coffee cup blurred.
Macro Lenses
Macro lenses are commonly used in close up images. They are utilized to snap the photographs of insects and small animals. A typical feature of the macro lens is the sharp depth of field.
An additional constraint with macro lenses is lighting. If you are interested in macro photography, constantly play around with the lighting just so that you become acclimated to the required lighting.
What to buy?
If you are not sure what types of lenses to purchase, and are still exploring, then having a few zoom lenses is a good tactic. A zoom lens allows you to switch between the possibilities of the portrait lens and the telephoto lens.
